Honoring the Past, Sailing into the Unknown
Admiral Lazarev is a yacht named in honor of Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev, an outstanding Russian naval officer, admiral, and one of the key figures in the early exploration of Antarctica. Born in 1788 in Russia, Lazarev commanded the sloop Mirny, which accompanied Vostok under the leadership of Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen during the First Russian Antarctic Expedition. On January 28, 1820, near the Fimbul Ice Shelf, their crews recorded one of the first confirmed sightings of the Antarctic continent. The expedition also led to the discovery of Peter I Island and Alexander I Island. Lazarev’s name lives on in geography and maritime history—the Lazarev Sea, Lazarev Ice Shelf, and his reforms in the Black Sea Fleet stand as a testament to his legacy.
Today, the modern yacht Admiral Lazarev carries on the tradition of great explorers. This one-of-a-kind motor-sailing expedition vessel is specially outfitted for high-latitude navigation and scientific research. Built in 1987 by legendary yacht designer Ron Holland and fully refitted in 2025, the yacht now boasts state-of-the-art navigation and safety systems, modern power infrastructure, and extended autonomous capabilities.
With a robust steel hull, five sails covering a total area of 250 m˛, a hydraulic lifting platform, and full satellite communications, Admiral Lazarev is a reliable and versatile platform for exploring remote corners of the world. Its interior is designed for comfort and efficiency: six cabins, a spacious saloon, a fully equipped galley, and advanced water and power systems provide optimal conditions for research teams and long-distance voyages. More than just a vessel, Admiral Lazarev is a tribute to the spirit of discovery. It stands as a bridge between the legacy of historic navigation and the challenges of today—uniting tradition, technology, and a passion for new frontiers.
