Heading for 90 degrees North! Set off from Spitsbergen to sail to the edges of the Earth and reach the North Pole, the Holy Grail of adventurers in search of “the end of the world”. Aboard Le Commandant Charcot, a technological cocoon designed for exploration, you will encounter a wild and silent world that evolves according to the ice and the plays of light. During your crossing, you will probably be lucky enough to observe spectacular fauna - polar bears, seals or whales - before, perhaps, walking on the ground of this territory frozen by the cold, the northernmost point of our planet.

We are privileged guests in these extreme lands where we are at the mercy of weather and ice conditions. Our navigation, mainly in the fjords, will be determined by the type of ice we come across. Embark on explorations to the farthest reaches of the world where each day is marked by Zodiac landings led by your dedicated expedition team. Glaciologists, ornithologists, ethnologists, and marine mammal specialists — true experts of these remote regions — invite you to a fully immersive and enlightening experience. PONANT organises transfers between the airport and the port (and vice-versa) and flights Paris/Longyearbyen/Paris, a package included in your cruise fare.

Highlights:

Day 1: Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen
Embarkation
Longyearbyen is the capital of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago, located on Svalbard’s main island, and is the northernmost territorial capital on the planet. Glaciers, mountains stretching as far as the eye can see and untouched nature make you feel like you’re in completely unexplored territory. Embarkation is from 16:00 to 17:00, with departure at 18:30.

Day 2: At sea along Spitsbergen
Millennial glaciers and rugged mountains
The largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, Spitsbergen is the last piece of land before the Arctic ice floe. Aboard your ship, you will sail along the extremely spectacular coastline of this icy land, discovering a jagged coastline, hollowed-out by fjords, a unique setting that is the refuge of a particularly rich avifauna.

Day 3-5: Navigating through the sea ice
Heart of the ice floe
Enjoy the absolutely unique experience of sailing to the heart of the ice floe, this vast expanse of virgin, immaculate ice. The landscapes are constantly changing, shifting from a smooth, flat wilderness to a chaos of ice, then to channels of open water. Your ship will sail along naturally open channels and through areas where the frozen layer is thinnest.

Day 6-7: Geographic North Pole
90° North latitude
Defined by a 90° North latitude, the Geographic North Pole lies on the Earth’s rotational axis, at the intersection of all meridians. Plunged into darkness for six months of the year, then lit by the sun for the following six months, this mythical site, permanently covered in ice and remote from any land, has fascinated generations of explorers.

Day 8-11: Navigating through the sea ice
Unique maritime moments
Continue the unique experience of sailing through the ice floe, shifting through the naturally open channels and exploring this vast expanse of virgin ice while searching for totally dependent fauna.

Day 12: North-West region of Spitsbergen
Preserved beauty
A kingdom of contrasts and natural marvels dotted with islands and peninsulas, northwest Spitsbergen fascinates with its preserved beauty. Aboard our Zodiacs and in the company of naturalist-guides, get as close as possible to unique fauna including majestic whales, seals, walrus, Arctic foxes, Svalbard reindeer, Arctic terns, and polar bears.

Day 13: Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen
Disembarkation
Return to Longyearbyen. Disembarkation is at 8:00 for the transfer to the airport and the return flight.

NOTE: Embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy—and excitement—of expedition travel. When traveling in extremely remote regions, your expedition staff must allow the sea, the ice and the weather to guide route and itinerary details. This itinerary is a tentative outline of what you’ll experience on this voyage; please be aware that no specific itinerary can be guaranteed.
