Nature unlimited
See the natural world on a completely new scale during this fortnight of exploration in Greenland, taking in two of the most significant environments on the planet: Scoresbysund and the Northeast Greenland National Park.

Explore the mythical Scoresbysund, the largest fjord system in the world, its labyrinthine pathways strewn with cathedral-size icebergs. Encounter the local wildlife, including musk ox, Arctic foxes, Arctic hares, and maybe even (though they are rare here) polar bears and narwhals.

Next, take the unique opportunity to explore the lesser-visited Northeast Greenland National Park, a remote protected area and the largest national park in the world. This pristine Arctic environment, its vast tundra and Arctic ecosystem undisturbed by human activity, is as far from “the real world” as you can get without leaving the planet. Reset in nature unlimited.

Meet Your Svalbard Photography Guide
Piet van den Bemd
Expedition & Photography Guide
Piet developed a fascination for nature as a child through travelling with his parents to different continents, and receiving his first camera at age 16 inspired him to pursue photography as a way to share the beauty of the natural world and raise awareness of fragile environments.

Our expedition team has extensive experience in Svalbard and will seek out the optimal places for photography based on the conditions. Our Svalbard Photography Guide will help prepare you for your photography expedition!

The Voyage
Secret Atlas is founded, led, and made for explorers by explorers. We understand that every expedition is unique, so we don’t follow a fixed itinerary. We believe that real expeditions should follow the opportunities that the wilderness offers and our expert guides know exactly how to maximise your experience. The following itinerary is an example. Every expedition is flexible and inherently authentic as its course will be defined on a daily basis sustained by the opportunities presented by weather, ice and wildlife.

Days 1-2
Starting from Keflavik Airport, Iceland, our charter plane will take us to Nerlerit Inaat Airport (Constable Point), Greenland, where we will join our expedition ship.

Days 3-5
Explore Scoresbysund, touring steep-sided Ofjord and landing on the Bear Islands for panoramic views of this scenic stretch of the fjord system.

Land on Sydkap to discover Thule remains and a hunters’ cabin, gaining a dramatic perspective on the surrounding icebergs

Days 6-7
Sail into Kong Oscars Fjord, entering the Northeast Greenland National Park.

Land at Antarctic Havn, hearing the stories of Erik the Red and the Norwegian governor who had his residence here in the 1930s, and hiking to an atmospheric cabin, half-submerged by an avalanche.

Stop at Holm Bugt, with its sandy beach, trapper cabin, and Thule remains – we might even spot some lemmings!

Segelsällskapet Fjord is a hugely geologically rich area, with alternating layers of dolomite and limestone jutting attractively out of the Earth.

Days 8-10
Continue the adventure in the wondrous Kejser Franz Josephs Fjord, taking in the island of Ymer Ø and the extraordinarily dramatic Teufelsschloss (Devil’s Castle) peak.

Blomsterbugt (Flowers Bay in Danish) is an attractive spot to absorb the colours of the surrounding plainland, spot divers, and meet the local population of Arctic hares. But there’s a darker side to this bay the Norwegians called Vargbukta (or Wolf Bay).

At the end of Kejser Franz Josephs Fjord, land on Kapp Ovibos, a sandy bay known for its wildflowers.

Days 11-12
Head back to Scoresbysund via Storefjord, an abandoned Norwegian hunting, meteorological, and radio station, and Raffles Ø, a small uninhabited island.

Days 13-14
Sail to Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the remotest towns on the planet, with an idiosyncratic culture and way of life.

Fly back to Keflavik on a charter plane, enjoying dinner and a night in a hotel before returning home.
