Step onboard an expedition vessel for this Svalbard photography tour with photographer Rick Tomlinson as you journey north to explore and photograph the Arctic wildlife and landscapes of Svalbard. This unique voyage takes place in April as Svalbard emerges from the winter. This tour takes place on a warm and comfortable expedition vessel with just 12 guests. The exact route will be determined by the sea ice conditions which is all part of the spirit of adventure of exploration.

Not only we travel from one point to another and find our shelter on board the ship we chose. We also enjoy from incredible scenery, landscapes and interactions that only our noble vessel can provide.
Everyday the Bridge Team navigates the ship to position ourselves on the best posible spots, looking for unique opportunities.
Many times, this includes sainig through narrow passages, on the vicinity of glaciers or entering bays and fjords only approachable from the ship.

Shore excursions are the backbone of almost all itineraries, with most ships making landfall at least once every day once they reach their destination. The weather plays a huge role in your daily itinerary, although given the sheer array of fantastic landing sites all over there are plenty of options your Captain and Expedition Leader can choose from. On-shore excursions allow you to visit scientific research stations, communities, prominent wildlife colonies and take hikes to elevated viewing points for fantastic photography.

The photography workshops are composed of onboard lectures and practical activities led by dedicated expedition guide. Each session is meant to give you additional skills you can put into immediate practice out in nature.
You'll become more familiar with your own camera equipment while also learning best practices for taking pictures of moving wildlife and wide-open terrain in typical polar conditions, such as dim lighting and falling snow.
Zodiac cruising More info about this activity
On board the Zodiac you will discover a world of possibilities; accessing the most exclusive landing sites, cruising the coast in search of wildlife or simply enjoying a tour in the calm of the polar regions in search of marine wildlife or bird colonies.
The blue ice an its intimate presence is experienced at its best on zodiac tours.
It is not uncommon to meet curious seals, or humpback whales feeding.

Expedition cruising must be one of the most incredible ways of travelling. Not only for the amazing places you visit and the unforgetable wildlife but for the wildlife, the sensory overload and the unimaginable memories.
But all of this needs a context in order to understand where you are and what you are experiencing.
On board your expedition vessell you will find a group of experts, naturalists, zodiac drivers and guides that that will translate the language of nature for you, telling you the stories of the places you are visiting, reviewing the historical, biological, ecological and geological aspects of your trips.
You will experience first hand what surrounds you and arrive back home wiser and loaded with new knowledge.
Svalbard Photography Tour Highlights
· Early in the season gives us the opportunity to photograph Svalbard in its frozen state as it emerges from the winter.
· Explore the frozen North-west of Spitsbergen with a good chance of encountering polar bears.
· Develop your photography skills in the field with a highly experienced Arctic photographer.
· Learn about the area from our expert Svalbard guide.
· Encounter the wildlife which could include polar bears, walruses, Arctic foxes, Svalbard reindeer, and whales.
· Photograph and explore the coastline by Zodiac landing craft.
· Comfortable, and intimate ice-strengthened expedition vessel.
Day 1 Longyearbyen
Your Svalbard photo tour departs from Longyearbyen, the most northerly town on earth. Upon leaving the Port of Longyearbyen you will say goodbye to civilisation for the next 8 days to explore the rugged coastline, searching for landscape and wildlife photography opportunities at every stage. As you sail north you are likely to encounter glaciers and sea ice which make the perfect photo subjects. Early in the season, the exact route will be determined by the sea ice conditions which vary year on year.
Day 2 Prins Karls Foreland
As you leave the Isfjord you will keep a good lookout on deck for whales and other marine life that is common in this area. You have frequently encountered whales including blue and humpback whales, belugas, and walruses. The plan is to land on the island of Prins Karls Foreland and do a short hike to a walrus colony. Here you will spend some unhurried time observing and photographing the walruses as they swim and haul out onto the beach.
Days 3 – 6 Sea Ice and North-west Spitsbergen
You will sail as far north as possible along the west coast of Spitsbergen keeping a lookout for wildlife including polar bears that inhabit the area. The ultimate plan if the conditions allow is to venture up to the edge of the sea ice and spend some time there searching for polar bears that use the sea ice to hunt from. The sea ice itself is a mesmerising photography subject and in calm conditions, it can be possible to launch the landing craft to cruise in between the ice. You will then explore the frozen north-west coast travelling as far as the ice will allow us in search of photography opportunities.
Day 7 Ny-Alesund
As you head back south towards Longyearbyen if the ice conditions permit you will visit the scientific research settlement of Ny Alesund, the most northerly settlement on earth. You will explore the area around Kongsfjord and sail as close as we can get to one of Svalbard’s largest glaciers on the Lillyhook fjord for some great photo opportunities.
Day 8 Longyearbyen
The Svalbard photo tour ends back in Longyearbyen. After your final breakfast, you will say your goodbyes and disembark at the port after making new friends and sharing an exciting photography adventure together.
