But all of this needs a context in order to understand where you are and what you are experiencing.

Sea kayaking is one of the highlights for any Polar Traveller, providing ice and weather conditions are assessed as safe by your Expedition Team.

Hiking options include very easy beach hikes (good for photographers who need time for photography), easier short hikes, medium-difficulty extended hikes, and more challenging long hikes.

Assisted by the naturalist or local guides, you will look for the perfect spot and spend a quiet momento practicing this sport or you will cut your hole on the ice floe or on frozen lakes and try to catch fish using an ancestral method. This activity off the beaten path will equally delight fans of sports fishing and those who are curious for new discoveries.
This expedition offers a pretty wild experience miles away from everyday life, designed for those looking for a quite special and real travel experience. Sailing on board the sturdy steel vessel Valiente, you will cross the Denmark Strait on an Arctic ocean crossing in the wake of the vikings. This proper crossing brings you close to nature, where for days you will see only the big ocean, whales, and birds, while participating as part of the crew in a rotating watch system under the bright polar night.
Upon reaching Greenland, the journey focuses on exploring Ammassalik Island and the surrounding fjords. In this dramatic and beautiful landscape, glaciers constantly melt and pour ice into the waters near the main icecap. The expedition combines coastal sailing with land exploration, including hiking along long mountain ridges, potential ice trekking, and visiting local settlements before crossing back to conclude the trip with a celebratory dinner in Reykjavik.

Day 1: Welcome on board in Ísafjörður
Expedition beginning
We meet on the dock in Isafjordur at 12:00 on this first day to get to know each other, go through safety routines, and plan the first days. Once our expedition ship is loaded and organized, we leave harbour to practice manoeuvres and safety drills, likely anchoring in the magnificent north-western fjords of Iceland.
Day 2-4: Ocean crossing over the Denmark Strait to East-Greenland

We head out to sea, setting our course due west towards Greenland and Ammassalik Island. The 360-nautical-mile crossing takes 2-3 days depending on weather. While sailing, we run the ship in watches of 4 hours on and 8 hours off, rotating tasks like cooking, steering, trimming sails, and looking out for whales.
Day 5-8: Exploring Greenland; Ammassalik Island and the surrounding fjords
Exploration and glaciers
We spend these days exploring Ammassalik Island and nearby fjords where glaciers constantly melt into the sea. We will hike longer ridges on the north side of the island and try hiking on the ice, adapting our watch rotation so everyone can participate in the shore explorations.
Day 9-11: Ocean crossing back to Iceland

We set our course eastward back to Iceland. The 360-nautical-mile journey takes 2-3 days in watches of 4 hours on and 8 hours off. We rotate on ship duties and keep a lookout for Greenland whales, birds, and curious animals before arriving in Reykjavik as proper sailors and explorers.
Day 12: Trip end in Reykjavik
Farewell and check-out
We sail into Reykjavik in the morning, clean and wash the boat, pack our things, and check out at 12:00. It is recommended to stay an extra night in Reykjavik so we can meet up to eat or drink out in the city pubs on this final evening.

Drinks such as wine, beer or exclusive apple juice and other luxuries (yes, we drink beer and wine on board, bring your own)
Travel insurance and/or cancellation insurance – (up to you, but recommended!)
Sleeping arrangements in shared cabins with double or bunk beds can be a bit of a puzzle, but we’re pretty good at figuring it out. Let us know if you have preferences. You’re on your own for land accommodations before or after the trip.
