A 6 day self drive tour that takes you to all the highlights in south and west Iceland and offers you great chances of seeing the Northern Lights!

Self drive in Iceland in the off-season is a great choice, and this tour takes you to all the highlights of south and west Iceland. As you will be spending 3 nights in the countryside, you will have a great chance of seeing the Northern Lights, if the conditions are favourable!

Day 1: Arrival – Keflavík – Reykjavík
Pick up the rental car at Keflavík international airport upon arrival and drive to Reykjavík where you stay the first night. Depending on your arrival time, an optional visit to the Blue Lagoon may be possible.

Day 2: Reykjavík – South Shore – Vík
Drive east along the south coast making stops at the inspiring Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara and explore the option of hiking or snowmobiling on Sólheimajökull glacier. Accommodation in a country hotel outside of Vík which offer good conditions for observing the northern lights if they come out to play!

Day 3: Skaftafell – Jökulsárlón – Vík
Continue east across the sands of glacier rivers and lava fields towards Kirkjubćjarklaustur and Skaftafell National Park, an oasis of vegetations surrounded by mountains and glaciers. Continuing along the foot of Europe´s largest glacier, Vatnajökull, we reach Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and the famous „Diamond Beach“. Then head back to Vík for overnight at the same hotel.

*Optional tour available: Glacier hike in Skaftafell, Boat tour at Jökulsárlón (October only)

Day 4: The Golden Circle – Borgarnes
Depart Vík and head back west, now towards the famous Golden Circle, visiting the Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall and Ţingvellir National Park before arriving in Reykjavík in the late afternoon.
Driving towards Hvalfjörđur continue towards Borgarnes. Accommodation in the area.

Day 5: Borgarnes – Snćfellsnes – Reykjavík
A full daytour to one of the most beautiful parts of Iceland, the Snćfellsnes peninsula, which is often playfully called „Little Iceland“, as you can find all natural phenomena in Iceland there: lava fields, volcanic craters, glacier, waterfalls, sandy beaches, charming fishing towns, bird cliffs and more. On Snćfellsnes peninsula you will also find one of the most photographed Icelandic mountains – Mr.Kirkjufell. Driving back through the town of Borgarnes continue further south to Reykjavík for the last overnight.

Day 6: Reykjavík – Keflavík – Departure
Drive to Keflavík airport in time for check in for your international flight.
If your flight departs late afternoon, then you have the possibility to add an optional whale watching boat tour in the morning, drive around the Reykjanes peninsula or visit the Blue Lagoon before dropping of the rental car at Keflavík airport.

Possibility for add-on: Winter Highlights of North Iceland or Northern Lights Special in North Iceland.

The Northern Lights are a naturally occurring phenomenon that no-one can control. Seeing them is always dependent on weather conditions, Northern Light activity on any given date, but also some planning!
