Every autumn, the fjords of northern Norway teem with herring seeking calmer waters for the winter, closely followed by orcas and humpback whales. This expedition invites travelers to go a step beyond traditional observation, providing the unique opportunity to jump into the water and swim alongside these majestic animals in their natural habitat. Aboard a robust 70-foot expedition vessel designed for Arctic waters, you will sail between snow-capped peaks and breathtaking landscapes, actively participating as part of the crew in all onboard tasks, from steering to trimming the sails.

The experience takes place during the "bright dark season," characterized by vibrant purple tones and perpetual sunrises or sunsets that bathe the mountains in warm colors. It is the ideal setting to witness the spectacle of the Northern Lights while anchoring in remote ports without light pollution. The journey combines the intensity of marine encounters with land-based activities such as beach bonfires and hiking, always under the guidance of experts who share knowledge about animal behavior and seafaring life. After the swims, the comfort of the heated vessel with hot showers provides the perfect sanctuary.

Highlights:
Swim with orcas and humpback whales in the herring-rich waters of the Arctic.
Actively participate as crew by learning sailing and navigation techniques.
Observe the Northern Lights in the heart of their epicenter in remote fjords.
Explore pristine landscapes and historic fishing villages in Northern Norway.
Specialized gear included such as dry suits for swimming in cold waters.

Day 1: Welcome on board!
Meeting in Tromsø and first sail
Meeting at the pier in Tromsø guest harbor at 16:00 to get to know the crew and the boat. Safety routines and the weekly program will be reviewed before setting sail this first evening towards Grøtsundet, Lyngen, and Skjervøy. The goal is to anchor north of Tromsø to improve the chances of starting the trip with a Northern Lights show.

Day 2: Full sailing day towards Kvænangen
Sailing lessons and beach bonfire
After a quiet morning, participants will put on their sailing gear for a practical lesson while rounding the Lyngen peninsula. After lunch on board, the course will be set for an anchorage or harbor closer to Kvænangen. If the weather is clear, a trip to the beach for a bonfire will be made in the evening.

Day 3: Whale watching and swimming in the sea
Searching for herring and marine giants
The day starts with an early breakfast to make the most of the available daylight hours. The search will focus on finding herring, where orcas and humpback whales are most likely to be found. When it gets dark, the boat will sail to Spildra, where travelers can enjoy a sauna and visit a small local pub to connect with the permanent residents.

Day 4: Whale Watching Adventure
Photography and respectful observation
Sails will be hoisted early to continue the search for marine life. Using sailing boats allows for a quiet and respectful approach, ideal for observing creatures in their natural habitat. The magical winter light will provide perfect photography opportunities. In the evening, a calm bay will be found to watch for the Northern Lights.

Day 5: Exploring the Wilderness
Regional wildlife and island hiking
The search for whales will continue in areas most known for sightings, possibly encountering other regional wildlife. In the afternoon, a break from sailing can be taken to go hiking on nearby islands. The day will culminate with another chance to see the Northern Lights from the boat or on land.

Day 6: Sailing back to Tromsø & wrap up of the week
Final sightings and reflection
On the final whale watching day, the crew will head to the most promising areas to maximize chances of seeing orcas and humpbacks in action. As the sun sets, a bonfire might be made on a secluded beach to share stories and reflect on the adventures under the Arctic sky.

Day 7: Good bye for now
Return to port
On the last morning, breakfast will be enjoyed while sailing back to Tromsø. After cleaning and packing, the group will say goodbye at the starting dock at 16:00, marking the end of the adventure.
