Sylvia Earle: A ship that takes you by surprise

A new ship offering immense comfort and plenty of vantage points to observe the outside world.

The Sylvia Earle is a next-generation expedition vessel specifically designed to navigate polar regions. It offers a 5-star standard where visibility and contact with nature take centre stage. Although it has a larger capacity, the operator caps it at just 134 passengers, providing extra comfort both on board and during shore landings.

Life On Board (The Ship)

Cabins and Comfort: The cabins are spacious, functional, and flooded with natural light. A brilliant logistical touch is the underfloor heating in the bathrooms, which allows you to dry your landing gear quickly after each excursion.
Gastronomy: The dining setup typically features a buffet for breakfast and lunch, and à la carte service for dinner. The cuisine is top-tier, featuring varied daily menus with a notable Asian influence. The atmosphere is casual, with open seating that allows you to dine with other passengers or expedition guides—no reservations or dress codes required.
View Points, Decks, and Lounges: The ship is full of spots to take in the landscape. Highlights include the outdoor decks on levels 4, 5, 6, and 7, as well as the citizen science lab (Deck 5) and the Observation Lounge at the bow on Deck 8.
My favorite Spot on the Ship: The Deck 8 Observation Lounge and the Deck 7 stern, specifically the lounge chairs right next to the pool.

The Expedition Experience

This vessel has a clear focus on adventure and maximising time spent outside the ship.
The landings are exceptionally well-coordinated. The mudroom is spacious and comfortable, which streamlines the process of getting dressed and geared up before heading out.
The educational program is comprehensive, covering a variety of scientific and historical topics. The depth of these presentations usually depends on the specific expedition team's background and the nature of each voyage.
Accessing the Zodiac boats from the side gates (port and starboard) is simple and efficient. As with any polar operation, a standard level of mobility is required to get in and out of the boats.

Communications

The ship offers complimentary Wi-Fi. The connection works well for the essentials, such as emails, WhatsApp, and messaging apps. However, speeds can be limited if you are trying to upload heavy social media content or stream video.

Conclusion and Verdict

Choose this ship if you want to be amazed by the professionalism of expedition leaders and captains whose experience and dedication drive them to relentlessly pursue the best possible plan as weather conditions shift. You will experience the polar regions in their truest form: remote, inhospitable, and breathtaking.
This ship is incredibly versatile and can manoeuvre in conditions and areas where many others simply cannot. The team will do whatever it takes to execute every plan—or rewrite them on the fly—exhausting every single possibility when nature challenges the operation.
