The Sylvia Earle is a modern expedition vessel that achieves something far from easy: combining an authentically adventurous experience with a level of comfort that is truly felt on board.
I sailed on this ship in Svalbard in July 2025, with only 60 passengers on board (despite its 134-passenger capacity), which made the experience feel even more intimate and seamless. From the very first moment, the feeling was clear: a comfortable, quiet ship perfectly prepared for ice exploration without losing that expeditionary spirit.

Cabins and Comfort
My experience was in a balcony stateroom, which was spacious, comfortable, and very well-designed. The bed was excellent (a significant detail on this kind of trip), the bathroom was functional, and a great feature: space to dry landing gear, including heated floors that helped immensely.
One thing that truly stands out is how quiet the ship is. Navigating through the ice without constant mechanical noise makes the experience much more immersive.
Gastronomy
The food is another strong point:
Breakfast and Dinner: Buffet style.
Lunch: A la carte.
Everything offered variety, good quality, and a relaxed, informal atmosphere. A detail that adds a lot: the expedition team has lunch and dinner with the passengers, creating closeness and leading to super interesting conversations.
Common Spaces
The ship is very well-designed to enjoy the surroundings:
Wide decks with armchairs and comfortable spaces.
Observation lounge with panoramic views and a bar.
A great balance between indoor and outdoor spaces.
My favourite place, without a doubt, was Deck 8 at the bow: there you could watch the ship break through the ice and listen to that incredible sound. It is one of those moments you never forget. I also spent a lot of time on my private balcony, simply watching the landscape pass by.
The Expedition Experience
This is a ship that delivers on what it promises: a real expedition.
* Up to 2 landings per day.
* Very agile and organised operation.
* Total priority on getting out to explore.
The expedition team is expert-level, offering very interesting daily talks (whales, mammals, ecosystems) and a friendly approach that adds a lot to the experience. Zodiac boarding is easy and well-organised, making everything flow without stress.
Something that truly surprised me was the team's attitude: always looking to go a little further, taking advantage of conditions and maximising every opportunity.
Connectivity
WiFi included.
* It worked remarkably well (not just for messaging).
* A major differentiator for this type of travel.
Details that make the difference
One of my favourite moments was returning from a landing, heading straight to the outdoor jacuzzi, and relaxing with those completely surreal views. That contrast between adventure and comfort defines this ship perfectly.
👉 Ideal for: Travelers looking for a complete polar experience, where onboard comfort and an expeditionary spirit complement each other perfectly.
👉 Not ideal for: Those who prioritise price alone or are looking for the most basic option. This trip is an experience, not just a transport.
