Small Expedition Ship Versus Large Cruise Ship

Many people often ask me about life on board expedition cruise ships, like for instance, a very common question: what are the available amenities on board?

The answer, with few exceptions, is that there aren't many. Unlike larger, luxury cruise ships that boast a plethora of entertainment and recreational facilities, expedition ships are designed with a different focus in mind. The primary attractions and the main reasons we choose to embark on these smaller, more intimate vessels lie outside the ship itself.

Expedition cruises are all about immersing oneself in nature and exploring the remote, unspoiled regions of the world. These ships are specifically built to navigate through narrow waterways and reach destinations that larger ships simply cannot access. As such, the emphasis is placed on the experiences and adventures that await outside rather than on the shipboard amenities (although there are luxury small expedition ships with great amenities on board). Days at sea are also enjoyed, birdwatching sessions are on demand

Small Expedition Ships

On small expedition cruise ships you will find a cozy and comfortable environment that fosters a sense of camaraderie among passengers. The smaller size of expedition ships allows for more personalized service and the opportunity to forge deeper connections with fellow travelers who share a passion for exploration and discovery.

Onboard, you can expect essential comforts such as a lounge for relaxation and socializing, a dining area, and possibly a small library or lecture room where experts share insights about the destinations. The real luxury, however, is in the unparalleled access to some of the most breathtaking landscapes and wildlife on the planet. Whether you're kayaking through icy fjords, hiking across rugged terrains, or observing wildlife in their natural habitats, the experiences are truly once-in-a-lifetime.
Moreover, the knowledgeable and experienced expedition teams onboard enhance the journey by providing guided excursions, informative talks, and hands-on learning opportunities. They are dedicated to ensuring that every passenger gains a deeper understanding and appreciation of the unique environments being explored.

In summary, while some expedition cruise ships may lack the extensive amenities found on larger vessels, they offer something far more valuable: the chance to engage with nature and its landscapes in a profound and more meaningful way. The focus on outdoor adventure and environmental immersion makes for a truly enriching travel experience, one that leaves lasting memories and a greater connection to the natural world.

See below a comparison with differences between Small Expedition Ships and Large Cruise Ships

Small Expedition Ships:

  • Main focus: Small cruise ships are focused on nature and wildlife, with much interest in history & culture. Big cities and big ports are not a goal in their itineraries, but they could be used as the beginning or the end of a voyage.

  • What is there to do?: Outdoor activities such as: hiking, kayaking, paddling, Zodiac cruising, photo workshops, citizen science, snowshoeing, camping, diving, snorkeling, standup paddle boarding, mountaineering, skiing, and helicopter flights.

  • Life on board: Small ships tend to have an intimate and friendly atmosphere, casual dressing and open seating at the restaurant. Activities onboard are subject to wildlife availability and nature, and weather conditions outside the ship to make the most of it. The main attractions are outside the ship.

  • Itinerary: Flexible itineraries, usually dictated by weather conditions and wildlife sightings. Focused on making outdoor activities as much as possible. Navigating in close to shore and better maneuverability means that the experience is at the tip of your fingertips rather than off the distance.

Landings might happen everyday, once arrived to destination

Big Cruise Ships:

  • Main Focus: Focuses on large ports of call, onboard activities, shopping, bars, spas, and health clubs. They are floating resorts.

  • What is there to do? Whatever you can find on board the ship. Optional excursions are often not included on big cruise ships. The optional tours may include traditional shore excursions in large groups, featuring coaches and standard tours.

  • Life on board: Attractions are on the ship; they have multiple restaurants with assigned seating. NO shore excursions in the polar regions.

  • Itinerary: Fixed itineraries, ocean-going and open waterways, with days at sea. Big cruise ships don\\\\\\\'t sail on narrow waterways or in proximity to ice. Ships with more than 500 guest cannot land in polar regions.
