Possible introduction of fuel surcharge

In recent weeks, global fuel markets have shown significant volatility.

Ongoing geopolitical tensions and tightening supply of refined fuel products have driven prices upward, directly impacting operational costs across many industries—including expedition cruising in the Arctic and Antarctica.
For companies operating in remote places like Svalbard, Greenland, and the Canadian Arctic, as well as their surrounding areas, these challenges are even more pronounced. Refuelling (or “bunkering”) in places such as Longyearbyen is considerably more expensive than in major global ports, due to complex logistics and limited supply. On top of that, expedition vessels rely on Low Sulphur Marine Gas Oil (LSMGO), a cleaner but more expensive fuel required to comply with strict environmental regulations in polar regions.

Why Some Operators Are Introducing a Fuel Surcharge?

Given this context, some expedition operators have announced the introduction of a temporary fuel surcharge for upcoming Arctic departures in 2026.
This type of surcharge is not unusual in the travel industry. Airlines, cruise lines, and logistics companies have historically applied similar measures during periods of sustained fuel price increases. In this case, the surcharge reflects a portion of the additional cost operators are currently facing, rather than a profit-driven decision.
It’s also important to highlight that operators are typically absorbing a significant share of these rising costs themselves, only passing on a limited portion to travellers.

At first glance, any additional cost can feel frustrating. However, when put into perspective, the impact on the overall trip price is relatively modest.
Polar expeditions are premium, once-in-a-lifetime experiences—journeys that only a small number of travellers will ever have the opportunity to undertake. Within that context, a fuel surcharge represents just a small percentage of the total investment, typically amounting to a few hundred dollars on a multi-day voyage.
In other words, while it is a noticeable adjustment, it does not significantly alter the overall cost or value of the experience.
Despite these challenges, the essence of the experience remains unchanged: small-ship exploration, expert-led adventure activities, incredible wildlife encounters, and access to some of the most remote places on the planet.
Another key point is that these surcharges are generally introduced as temporary measures. Operators continuously monitor fuel markets and may adjust or remove the surcharge if conditions stabilise.
Equally important is the transparency behind these decisions. Reputable expedition companies clearly communicate the reasons for the surcharge, ensuring travellers understand that it is a direct response to external cost pressures rather than an arbitrary fee.

The overall value, uniqueness, and once-in-a-lifetime nature of these journeys remain firmly intact.
As always, at The Polar Travel Company, we will continue to monitor industry developments closely and keep our travellers informed with full transparency.
