Ongoing response to Avian Influenza as the Antarctic season unfolds

Latest news about avian flu in Polar Regions.
UPDATED DECEMBER 2023.

As we addressed in a previous post, a strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was identified in birds in Sub Antarctic territories (specifically South Georgia). In order to contain a serious outbreak and the arrival of the virus to Antarctica, the whole community of polar stakeholders, from Antarctic Treaty parties to scientists, researchers and IAATO tour operators (a community we are proud to belong to!) showed concern and compromise, responding with additional protocols to the already robust procedures already in place to protect Antarctica from pathogens and non-native species.

Simple but effective protocols in place.

  • Assessing visitor sites for signs of HPAI in wildlife colonies before commencing any landing (and being prepared to cancel a visit or leave a site if any behavioral signs of HPAI are detected).

  • A minimum distance of 5 meters /15 feet must be maintained from Antarctic Wildlife.

  • Not sitting, kneeling, crouching, or lying on the ground or snow.

  • If visitors are approached by wildlife, visitors must take appropriate action to ensure the advised minimum distance of 5 meters/15 feet is maintained where it can be safely done.

Always vigilant.

Responding to avian flu involves a combination of preventive measures, surveillance, and monitoring. Avian influenza knows no borders, and international collaboration is vital for monitoring and responding to outbreaks.

Given the ongoing scenario, the government of South Georgia has closed certain landing sites or may stand them temporarily closed until further notice. Despite this situation and being optimistic with the utmost caution, South Georgia still waits for use with many opportunities to enjoy this incredible destination on ships, zodiac cruises, and landings.
