MV Plancius: Everything is WOW

The Plancius is an expedition ship for just 108 passengers.
Its size and adventurous spirit make the entire experience feel authentic, close, and, above all, intense.

From the first day, its focus is clear: maximizing time outside the ship. The expedition team is constantly looking for new opportunities to explore, adapting each day to experience Antarctica to the fullest. And that is where you understand the most repeated phrase on board: everything is WOW.

The life on board: Cabin and comfort

My experience was in a twin porthole double cabin, located on deck 3. Without a doubt, one of the best locations: on the same level as the restaurant and the marina for boarding the zodiacs.
The cabin is comfortable and functional: space under the bed to store suitcases, a small closet if you want to unpack, and an entrance hall ideal for leaving boots, life jackets, and landing clothes.
The bathroom is also very well thought out: it has a heated towel rail to dry wet clothes, a hairdryer, and European plugs.

Gastronomy
The dynamics of the food follow the rhythm of the expedition.
Lunches: buffet style, designed to optimize time and be ready quickly for the next activity.
Dinners: vary between an a la carte menu or buffet, depending on the day and operations (for example, camping nights).
The quality is very good and the team is always attentive to specific needs (celiac, vegetarian, etc.). Everything is designed for you to enjoy without worrying about anything.

Common spaces and sightings
The ship offers multiple spaces for observation, with wide and comfortable decks.
• On deck 4 there is a large open space ideal for spending hours observing the local fauna.
• On deck 5, the observation lounge combines interior and exterior, with panoramic windows that allow you to continue enjoying the landscape without getting cold.

My favorite place
The observation lounge was, without a doubt, the heart of the trip. A natural meeting point between passengers and staff.
On my departure (Basecamp), there were many solo travelers, which created a very social environment. It was the perfect place to chat, share experiences, and continue learning even outside of formal talks.

The expedition experience

The Plancius has a 100% expedition profile, with a clear focus on adventure.
Traveling in March, we managed to land in places where it had not been possible throughout the season. Always looking for new places that surprised both the passengers and the staff.

The expedition team
One of the great differentiators of the trip.
On board there were geologists, biologists specializing in whales, climbing experts, and camping guides. The talks were daily (sometimes even two per day) and they were always available to answer questions and delve into each topic.

Landings and operations
Being fewer than 100 passengers, we all landed at the same time, which makes a big difference in the experience, as the landing time is much longer.
The flexibility of the itinerary was key. An incredible example: one day a land landing was canceled to do a zodiac cruise because there were more than 50 whales resting in the area. Decisions like that are what make each trip unique.

Zodiac boarding
The process is very agile. The ship has a marina from where the passengers are organized, and the expedition team assists at all times to get on and off safely.

Connectivity

The ship has internet via Starlink.
Each passenger has 1GB per device per day, which is renewed daily at 9:00 PM. It is enough to use WhatsApp, social networks, or light emails.
For more demanding uses (video calls or heavy files), additional packages can be purchased.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a real adventure trip, the Plancius is an ideal option.
These types of expeditions are designed for you to experience Antarctica in depth, with Basecamp itineraries that include activities such as camping, kayaking, and climbing, and with a team that constantly seeks to go beyond what is expected.
Even exploring new landing sites, some never before visited by some members of the staff.
If your idea is to live an authentic, intense, and different experience, this is the trip that truly fulfills that dream.
