Half Moon Island

Located on McFarlane Strait, is a crescent-shaped island famous for its stunning views of Livingston Island. It hosts a Chinstrap penguin colony and the Argentine station Comodoro Cámara.

This small island (approximately 2 km / 1.3 miles long) is a common destination for Antarctic cruise ships. A nice walk can be done, along the shore from one end to the other, and the view from the heights of Half Moon Island is renowned for providing a stunning panorama of the glacier-covered, rugged peaks of Livingston Island, with the ice fronts of the Huron glacier visible as they meet the sea.

The rock promontories with lichens and mosses are home to a Chinstrap penguin colony, and also Wilson storm petrels and Giant petrels nest on this beautiful place. Half Moon Island is also the site of an Argentinean summer research station, “Comodoro Cámara”.
