April is still considered winter in Svalbard, but it is felt that this period is the best time for photographers. Mid-summer: the high sun can lead to harsh shadows, you will be visiting during a period of beautiful soft light, and almost endless sunrise and sunset. During your time in Svalbard, at the end of the trip, you will celebrate the final sunset of the winter season, followed by the last sunrise 30 minutes later allowing everyone to experience the midnight sun as the Artic enters its long 24-hours of daylight summer; the sun won’t set again until August.

Travelling early, Svalbard is still encased in ice; later in the season bears are often sighted on rock, but encounters will be seeked out in snow and ice. While this makes sightings tougher, it does offer more photographically better opportunities. It is hoped to see walrus on ice floes, and Arctic fox in their white winter finery, while the landscape itself is white and frozen, as it is expected the Arctic to be.

As a dedicated photography trip, the most of light will be made, and positioning the group accord-ingly will ensure everyone has the time and space to take their shots, the opportunity to learn from the expert photographic guide, and the chance to have personal workflow and editing sessions. For an additional fee, long lens rentalcan be arranged, delivering these to your cabin at the start of the trip.
