Itinerary

We depart Bodø, located just north of the Arctic Circle. From here we sail south to experience the Saltstraumen maelstrom, this tidal phenomenon is the strongest ocean current in the world. Overnighting in in a sheltered cove or harbour, we’ll pause to experience the midnight sun and the outdoor hot tub.

Before leaving this area, we’ll explore the Karlsøyvær Nature Reserve and the trading post of Kjerringøy. The Karlsøyvær archipelago is among the largest coastal conservation areas found in Norway. It is protected to safeguard a valuable coastal area with values in botanical (sea shore vegetation) and ornithological (nesting and wintering area for seabirds).

Next, we continue north towards Vestfjord, docking at Engeløya. Today you can hike to Skagstadtind, SUP or kayak through the skerries, visit a white sand beach at Bøsand, bicycle around the island or visit the art gallery of a local artist, Hugo Aasjord.

Crossing open water along the ferry route takes you out past where you can see the shore, so you can experience the magic of the deep, arctic ocean. Along the way, watch for marine wildlife and other expedition ships.

We’ll visit remote Norwegian fishing villages such as Skrova and Henningsvær. Here you really get a first-hand account of what fishing was and is still like today. Try your hand at fishing, we’ll show you how, and eat the fresh fish that you caught. Wild-caught fish is a rare delicacy and a pure Norweigan experience.

Sailing further north, we sail from Henningsvær through the narrow islet of Gimsøysund under the Gimsøy bridge to the island of Gimsøy. Here you can hike up a steep mountainside to an alpine lake and try freshwater fishing, relax on the beach, play golf or go horseback riding.

A sailing expedition isn’t complete without a visit to the Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarkenes. The MS Finnmarken, built in 1956 and the second boat for the route, stands inside a spectacular glass structure. This ship serviced the entire coastal area travelling between Bergen and Kirkenes. These ships have been ferries, delivery boats and critical connectors to remote villages and towns since 1912.

And last, but certainly not least, we’ll sail into Trollfjord, a captivating fjord with towering cliffs. We’ll cruise through the 100m wide opening and spend time enjoying the unparalleled views. Watch for sea eagles up in the cliffs and capture photos if you can.

All throughout this sailing adventure, you can opt to take walks through uninhabited islands with white sand beaches, relax by a beach bonfire and make use of our kayaks or paddleboards. Optional activities that can be added are horseback riding, golfing or visiting seaside saunas. This summer arctic circle tour is flexible to accommodate your desires as well as the winds and tides.
