Duration: 10 days / 9 nights Starts: Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen Ends: Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen Language: English speaking voyage with German assistance
The itinerary is a guide only and is subject to change due to ice, weather, and wildlife conditions. The Expedition Leader determines the final plan. This voyage focuses on the pack ice of north Spitsbergen, aiming to sail close to 80° North. Sailing through the pack ice may be a multi-day affair.
Shore excursions are the backbone of almost all itineraries, with most ships making landfall at least once every day once they reach their destination. The weather plays a huge role in your daily itinerary, although given the sheer array of fantastic landing sites all over there are plenty of options your Captain and Expedition Leader can choose from. On-shore excursions allow you to visit scientific research stations, communities, prominent wildlife colonies and take hikes to elevated viewing points for fantastic photography.
On board the Zodiac you will discover a world of possibilities; accessing the most exclusive landing sites, cruising the coast in search of wildlife or simply enjoying a tour in the calm of the polar regions in search of marine wildlife or bird colonies.
The blue ice an its intimate presence is experienced at its best on zodiac tours.
It is not uncommon to meet curious seals, or humpback whales feeding.
Expedition cruising must be one of the most incredible ways of travelling. Not only for the amazing places you visit and the unforgetable wildlife but for the wildlife, the sensory overload and the unimaginable memories.
But all of this needs a context in order to understand where you are and what you are experiencing.
On board your expedition vessell you will find a group of experts, naturalists, zodiac drivers and guides that that will translate the language of nature for you, telling you the stories of the places you are visiting, reviewing the historical, biological, ecological and geological aspects of your trips.
You will experience first hand what surrounds you and arrive back home wiser and loaded with new knowledge.
Not only we travel from one point to another and find our shelter on board the ship we chose. We also enjoy from incredible scenery, landscapes and interactions that only our noble vessel can provide.
Everyday the Bridge Team navigates the ship to position ourselves on the best posible spots, looking for unique opportunities.
Many times, this includes sainig through narrow passages, on the vicinity of glaciers or entering bays and fjords only approachable from the ship.
Enjoy this incredible places from the comfort of the common areas on board, open decks or your own private balcony!
Hiking options include very easy beach hikes (good for photographers who need time for photography), easier short hikes, medium-difficulty extended hikes, and more challenging long hikes.
This 10-day expedition is the ultimate quest into the pack ice and along the remote shorelines of rugged North Spitsbergen. The primary focus is on maximizing opportunities to spot whales, polar bears, seabirds, and walruses. The northernmost point of the voyage may take you to the Seven Islands (Sjuøyane), where you may reach 80° north, just 870 km (540 miles) from the geographic North Pole.
The itinerary includes significant pack ice sailing, which may be a multi-day affair, offering the main draw for wildlife encounters with polar bears, ringed seals, and elusive Greenland (bowhead) whales. You will also explore historic sites like Ytre Norskøya, used by Dutch whalers, and magnificent glacier faces such as the Monaco Glacier. The expedition is defined by flexibility; the ship will retrace its route west, constantly watching for wildlife and exploring areas like Forlandsundet.
Highlights:
Focus on the pack ice of north Spitsbergen for multi-day exploration opportunities.
Aim to sail close to 80° North, just 870 km from the geographic North Pole, at the Seven Islands.
Engage in multi-day sailing through the pack ice, providing the best chances for polar bear and whale encounters.
Search for elusive Greenland (bowhead) whales and foraging fin whales near the continental shelf.
Explore historic whaling outposts like Ytre Norskøya and magnificent glacier fronts like Monaco Glacier.
Day 1: Largest town, biggest island
Embarkation and sailing out of Isfjorden
You touch down in Longyearbyen, the administrative center of Spitsbergen. Enjoy strolling around this former mining town, whose parish church and Svalbard Museum make for fascinating attractions. In the early evening the ship sails out of Isfjorden, where you might spot the first minke whale of your voyage.
Days 2-9: North Spitsbergen’s natural beauty, wildlife, and multi-day pack-ice
Raudfjord, Monaco Glacier, and The Seven Islands
This voyage will take you into the pack ice and along the remote shorelines of rugged North Spitsbergen. Destinations you might visit include:
Raudfjord
On the north coast of Spitsbergen, you can enjoy this expansive fjord spilling with glaciers – and maybe even visited by ringed and bearded seals. The cliffs and shoreline at Hamiltonbukta support thriving seabird colonies with Brünnich's guillemots, rich vegetation, and the possibility of polar bears. We will try to land at Alicehamna or Buchananhalvøya.
Ytre Norskøya
This small island was used for many years as a lookout point for Dutch whalers, and in fact we can still follow their tracks to the summit of the island. The remains of 17th-century blubber ovens can also be seen near about 200 graves. The north side of the island offers the rare opportunity to see puffins near their breeding places, and there is even a small colony of kittiwakes.
Monaco Glacier
Depending on the weather and sea ice, you could sail into Liefdefjorden, land at Texas Bar and cruise within sight of the 5-kilometer-long (3.1 miles) face of Monaco Glacier. The waters in front of this precipitous glacier are a favorite feeding spot for thousands of kittiwakes, and the base of the ice is a popular polar bear hunting ground. If ice conditions prevent us from sailing here early in the season, we can implement an alternate route along the west coast of Spitsbergen.
Northwest of Raudfjord
We aim to sail into the pack ice outside the territorial waters of Svalbard, watching for polar bears and elusive Greenland (bowhead) whales. As we sail from 80 N to 76 N along and in the outer fringes of the ice edge, we will also look for harp seals, hooded seals, polar bears, and migrating seabirds like little auks, Brünnich’s guillemots, and kittiwakes. On previous voyages in this area, we have sometimes seen up to hundred bowhead whales. We also have the chance to see northern bottlenose whales and the first fin whales of the season. The pack ice sailing will be a highlight of this voyage and may take up to three days.
Forlandsundet, St. Johns Fjord, or Alkhornet
Walruses sometimes haul out in Forlandsundet at Poolepynten. Alternatively, we might sail into St. Johns Fjord or south to the mouth of Isfjorden, landing at Alkhornet. Seabirds nest on these cliffs, Arctic foxes search below for fallen eggs and chicks, and reindeer graze the sparse vegetation.
We will sail along the edge of the continental shelf, a favorite feeding spot for thousands of kittiwakes and fin whales.
Day 10: There and back again
Disembarkation
Even great adventures must eventually come to an end. The vessel arrives back in Longyearbyen in the early morning, and bus transportation to the airport will be provided.

NOTE: Embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy—and excitement—of expedition travel. When traveling in extremely remote regions, your expedition staff must allow the sea, the ice and the weather to guide route and itinerary details. This itinerary is a tentative outline of what you’ll experience on this voyage; please be aware that no specific itinerary can be guaranteed.
