Set sail from St. John’s around the magnificent island of Newfoundland, the jewel of maritime Canada. Explore everything Newfoundland and its surroundings have to offer the seasoned explorer – including the vibrant French territory of St. Pierre, the last remaining French territory in North America – before discovering the island’s nature in tranquil Garia Bay. Discover the deep geological past of the island in Gros Morne National Park from Woody Point, and experience whaling heritage and subpolar nature on the rarely visited Labrador mainland.

Step in the footsteps of legendary Norse explorer Leif Erikson and marvel at gigantic icebergs drifting past cozy Twillingate before returning to the bustling capital of St. John’s. From the ancient past through to the modern day, woods to whales, Vikings to villages, Newfoundland awaits discovery. This circumnavigation offers a perfect balance between archaeological history, 450-million-year-old geological landscapes, and the warm hospitality of the local coastal communities of Atlantic Canada.

Highlights:
Visit to the Viking archaeological site of L’Anse aux Meadows, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Exploration of Gros Morne National Park, a geological marvel of the Earth's oceanic crust.
Discovery of St. Pierre, the last remaining French overseas territory in North America.
Sighting of monumental icebergs in Twillingate, known as the iceberg capital of Canada.
Immersion in the heritage of Basque whalers in the charming hamlet of Red Bay, Labrador.

Itinerary

Day 1: All Aboard in St. John’s!
Welcome to Newfoundland’s capital
The expedition begins in the bustling harbor of St. John’s, Newfoundland’s colorful capital. Lined with multicolored houses and cozy cafés, it is the perfect introduction. After safety briefings, settle into your stateroom and toast your departure as we set a course for the calm waters of Notre Dame Bay.

Day 2: Twillingate
The iceberg capital
Twillingate is the quintessential Newfoundland town, with brightly painted houses and boats rocking in the bay. It is the ideal place to explore nature guided by local residents. As icebergs from Greenland often end up here, keep your camera ready to capture these massive ice formations.

Day 3: L’Anse aux Meadows
In the footsteps of the Norse
Norse sagas tell of Leif, son of Erik, who found new lands to the west. Excavations started in 1961 proved the Norse reached the Americas before Columbus. We will come ashore by Zodiac at this UNESCO World Heritage Site to walk where legendary explorers left their legacy.

Day 4: Red Bay, Labrador
The northern frontier
Labrador is a vast span of coastline and fjords. In the charming hamlet of Red Bay, life has revolved around the ocean, just as it did for the Basque whalers who were among the first Europeans to settle here. We will explore the Labrador wilderness on foot and learn about this fascinating historical period.

Day 5: Woody Point
Gateway to Gros Morne National Park
Woody Point sits in Bonne Bay, a deep fjord shrouded in lush forest. It is the gateway to Gros Morne National Park, a geological marvel where oceanic crust was thrust upward 450 million years ago. Join local guides to learn about this dramatic landscape of unusual plants and stunted trees.

Day 6: Garia Bay
Untouched wilderness
Newfoundland is a large and mostly wild island. We will explore this remote corner of untouched beauty watching for seabirds, moose, or even the elusive Newfoundland black bear. Keep your binoculars ready for wildlife spotting in its natural habitat.

Day 7: St. Pierre
A slice of France in North America
Bienvenue to St. Pierre, the only French territory remaining in North America. While the landscape feels Canadian, metropolitan French is spoken in the streets, purchases are made in euros, and Bordeaux wine is found in restaurants. We will learn about life on this unexpected French territory off the coast.

Day 8: St. John’s, Disembarkation
Return to port
On the final day, we return to the harbor of St. John’s. After a hearty breakfast and a fond farewell to the crew and expedition team, we will disembark with memories of one of Canada’s most beautiful provinces.
