Optional

Welcome to Aurora’s Jewels of the Arctic expedition, an extraordinary 15-day journey spanning three Arctic seas. Explore Svalbard, a world of near-endless daylight, where polar bear sightings quicken your pulse, walrus haul out on sea ice and guillemot cries echo from towering cliffs. The expedition begins with a hotel stay and charter flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen.

In East Greenland, you will sail deep into the world’s largest fjord, Scoresbysund, and visit Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the world’s remotest Inuit settlements. You will cruise among iridescent icebergs sculpted into fantastic shapes and walk across tundra blooming in brightly coloured flowers. The voyage balances wilderness and culture, offering Zodiac-cruises along vast glacial fronts and the chance to learn about the history and culture of the Inuit people.

Highlights:
Watch arctic fox hunt beneath towering cliffs that are home to enormous colonies of guillemots and fulmars.
In Svalbard, push through pack ice, watch for polar bears and ringed seals.
Quietly approach musk oxen and reindeer on tundra walks.
Zodiac-cruise along vast glacial fronts and into Øfjord as sunset paints the surrounding 2,000-metre (6,562-feet) walls a vibrant pink.
Marvel at the ancient geology of East Greenland, where mountains are painted in stripes by nature’s brush and fjords are surrounded by walls of various shades of pinks, oranges and purple.
Learn about the history and culture of the Inuit people, who have inhabited this region for centuries.

Day 1: Arrive in Oslo
Transfer to group hotel
Arrive in Oslo, meet a representative of Aurora Expeditions, and transfer to our group hotel. Visit the Aurora Expeditions hospitality desk. All meals today are at your own expense.

Day 2: Fly to Longyearbyen, embarkation
Charter flight, guided tour, and sailing
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before transferring to the airport for our charter flight to Longyearbyen. Explore the town on a guided tour. Settle into your cabin before attending important safety briefings and enjoy the thrill of departure as we set sail.

Days 3–5: Svalbard
Arctic wilderness, wildlife, and polar plunge
The Expedition Team will tailor our itinerary based on weather, sea-ice, and wildlife encounters. See walrus hauled out on sea ice or on beaches. We visit towering cliffs noisy with nesting guillemots and puffins and stretch our legs on walks across tundra carpeted in wildflowers. Optional activity such as kayaking may be available, and participation in a polar plunge is possible.

Days 6–7: At Sea
Sailing towards East Greenland and expert talks
As we sail towards the coast of East Greenland, we may encounter whales feeding in the rich waters of the north. Our experts will inform and entertain us with fascinating discussions on plants, animals, ice and heroic tales of exploration.

Days 8-13: East Greenland
Scoresbysund, Ittoqqortoormiit, and ancient Thule sites
The east coast of Greenland is ours to explore, generally attempting up to two landings or Zodiac excursions per day. We hope to explore Scoresbysund, the world’s largest fjord, and visit the Inuit village of Ittoqqortoormiit, the most isolated permanent settlement. We will attempt to reach Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord and search for musk ox, arctic hare and reindeer on hikes across tundra.

Day 14: Denmark Strait
Crossing and wildlife photography
Crossing the Denmark Strait to Iceland, search for whale blows and photograph the many seabirds that trail our ship in the ever-present arctic winds.

Day 15: Disembark Reykjavik
Departure
During the early morning, we cruise into Reykjavik and disembark at approximately 8.00 am. Farewell your Expedition Team and fellow passengers as we all continue our onward journeys.

NOTE: Embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy—and excitement—of expedition travel. When traveling in extremely remote regions, your expedition staff must allow the sea, the ice and the weather to guide route and itinerary details. This itinerary is a tentative outline of what you’ll experience on this voyage; please be aware that no specific itinerary can be guaranteed.
