Shore excursions are the backbone of almost all itineraries, with most ships making landfall at least once every day once they reach their destination. The weather plays a huge role in your daily itinerary, although given the sheer array of fantastic landing sites all over there are plenty of options your Captain and Expedition Leader can choose from. On-shore excursions allow you to visit scientific research stations, communities, prominent wildlife colonies and take hikes to elevated viewing points for fantastic photography.

On board the Zodiac you will discover a world of possibilities; accessing the most exclusive landing sites, cruising the coast in search of wildlife or simply enjoying a tour in the calm of the polar regions in search of marine wildlife or bird colonies.
The blue ice an its intimate presence is experienced at its best on zodiac tours.
It is not uncommon to meet curious seals, or humpback whales feeding.

Expedition cruising must be one of the most incredible ways of travelling. Not only for the amazing places you visit and the unforgetable wildlife but for the wildlife, the sensory overload and the unimaginable memories.
But all of this needs a context in order to understand where you are and what you are experiencing.
On board your expedition vessell you will find a group of experts, naturalists, zodiac drivers and guides that that will translate the language of nature for you, telling you the stories of the places you are visiting, reviewing the historical, biological, ecological and geological aspects of your trips.

There’s important work being done every day, at some of the most renowned climate research facilities around the world, to record and study the incredible changes happening in remote places like Antarctica and th Arctic. As you might imagine, gathering critical on-site data on a regular basis would be a virtually impossible task for these groups. So we do it for them, in partnership with different research facilities.
If you’d like to get a first-hand look at how climate change is impacting our birds, sea life, glaciers, oceans, and weather patterns, and help scientists better understand our evolving planet, you’re welcome to join our Citizen Science program. And don’t let the word “science” scare you. We make it informative, interactive, and fun.

The photography workshops are composed of onboard lectures and practical activities led by dedicated expedition guide. Each session is meant to give you additional skills you can put into immediate practice out in nature.
You'll become more familiar with your own camera equipment while also learning best practices for taking pictures of moving wildlife and wide-open terrain in typical polar conditions, such as dim lighting and falling snow.
Snow Shoeing More info about this activity
This popular alpine activity is easy to learn. No experience is necessary – all you need is a willingness to try. All training is provided and our team of guides will have you trained and ready to go in no more than half an hour.
Participants should be confident in their footing and have an average level of fitness – outings may be up to three hours in duration. Those who enjoy hiking trails or taking long walks at home will possess enough fitness to enjoy this activity. As with any other activity, you will get more enjoyment out of it with some preparation in advance, such as long walks with uphill sections or bike riding.
In Antarctica, the longest hike can be 2-3 hours long, while in the Arctic it can be a full day tour.

Camp ashore in Antarctica!
After dinner, you’ll leave your cruise ship and zip ashore via a Zodiac. An experienced guide will choose the campsite spot and instruct everybody in how to set up their tents and sleeping bags. The next morning everybody will help to break down the camp, making sure that no gear or garbage gets left behind, and clean the camping gear. The location for camps and the number of camp nights offered depends on the operator, weather and location of the ship.

Day 1 Arrive in Santiago de Chile
Unescorted overnight in Santiago de Chile. There is a lot to discover in Chile’s capital, be it the Andean glaciers and mountains at the edges of the city or the colonial architecture and artistic neighborhoods that line the Mapacho River.
Included: One-night bed and breakfast at a centrally located three-star hotel
Day 2 Fly to Punta Arenas and embark the ship
Transfer from the hotel to the airport for a flight to Punta Arenas, where MS Roald Amundsen awaits. Once aboard the ship, guests join a mandatory safety drill before the Captain’s introduction and welcome dinner.
Included transfers and flight:
· Transfer from hotel to Santiago airport
· Flight in coach class from Santiago to Punta Arenas
· Transfer from Punta Arenas airport to the ship
Day 3 Explore the Chilean Fjords
From Punta Arenas, the ship journeys south through the Magellan Strait and into the wild and remote Beagle Channel. Guests will be able to admire the stunning scenery as we sail past a maze of islands, mountains, and fjords.
They may also be able to spot colonies of Magellanic penguins on the beaches together with lounging elephant seals. In the water, migrating blue, grey, and humpback whales, orcas, and playful dolphins may also be seen.
Day 4-5 Drake Passage - At sea
Possible landing at Cape Horn before sailing the Drake Passage to Antarctica
Exiting the Beagle Channel, we turn due south towards Antarctica, passing the iconic Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America. Before the Panama Canal, ships had to pass this infamous rocky island in order to cross between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Depending on sea and weather conditions, we will attempt to make a landing on Cape Horn, at the Captain’s discretion.
The Drake Passage connects the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Oceans and is the shortest crossing to Antarctica. It is also nicknamed the ‘Drake Shake’ when the seas are stormy or the ‘Drake Lake’ when the waters are still.
While at sea, and provided conditions are calm, guests may be able to sight whales, dolphins, and sea birds such as albatrosses and petrels. Join lectures and watch films about Antarctica in the Science Center or spend time enjoying the ship’s infinity pool, hot tubs, gym, and Wellness Center.
Day 6-12 Explore Antarctica
Each day, we venture to one of 22 possible sites to go cruising in small boats and to make landings where guests are able to observe penguin colonies, seals, whales, glaciers, and icebergs up close.
All aboard are invited to participate in lectures on glaciology, climate change, and marine biology. Guests can also engage in Citizen Science programs like photographing leopard seals and spotting whale tails that contribute directly to scientific research.
Included:
· Daily landings with short hikes to scenic or wildlife spots
· Small boat cruises near the ship and landing site
· Lectures on a wide range of scientific topics
Additional optional activities may include:
· Kayaking near icebergs, and possibly seals and penguins
· Longer small boat cruises to explore hard-to-reach areas

Day 13 At sea
As we return to open water, guests will have time to learn more in the Science Center, attend lectures, enjoy the ship’s infinity pool, hot tubs, gym, and Wellness Center, or just relax while bird and whale watching out on deck.
Day 14-16 Explore the Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory and guests can enjoy a pint of beer in one of the many typically English local pubs in the capital of Stanley. The ship will try to call at New Island, to the west of the Falkland archipelago and characterized by beautiful white sand beaches. It is a habitat for Gentoo, Magellanic, and Rockhopper penguins, the black-browed albatross, and peregrine falcons.We may also visit Carcass Island. Its steep cliffs and pretty coves attract rich bird life such as various species of songbirds, ducks, geese, caracaras, and wrens.

· Small boat cruises near the ship and landing site

Start at the historic Jubilee Villa gardens where local flora and fauna are found, stroll along Ross Road and visit Christchurch cathedral and the Whalebone Arch before proceeding to the Historic Dockyard Museum. Take the tour as part of a group or on an individual basis.

Take this self-timed walk through the highlights of Stanley's Capital.

We now return to Punta Arenas, completing our loop of the Magellan Strait. While at sea, guests may be able to sight whales, dolphins, and sea birds such as albatrosses and petrels. Join lectures in the Science Center or spend time enjoying the ship’s infinity pool, hot tubs, gym, and Wellness Center.
Day 18 Punta Arenas / Santiago de Chile
Arrive in Punta Arenas, disembark the ship, and fly back to Santiago de Chile
It’s time to return home via Punta Arenas and Santiago de Chile. Guests can extend their trip with a choice of excursions or a post-voyage program.
